We are planning a move to Eugene, and my husband is a little aprehensive of moving there because he thinks I "just want to move to a hippie town", and I am not considering the fact that he is not into the same things I am. So here goes! I am considering!

Do you have any BMX and motocross trax out there? I was also wondering how long it takes to get to the sand dunes...I think in Newport? And does anyone know if they are any fun for a long travel sand rail?

I also want to give him an idea of what else Eugen has to offer since we can't make a trip to visit for another month or two. He likes guy stuff, racing sports, and boating.

Thanks Everyone!

The dunes are huge, you can ride anything out there. It is a great time.
They are north of Coos Bay just a few miles, near North Bend (Midstate).

Have you all been to Eugene? It is more a college town than a hippy town, in fact Hippies are not a majority at all. Other than when country fair happens once a year, then its like St. Patricks day (everyone's Irish).....Everyone's a Hippy....
Now thats just what I hear, I actually never been to the country fair, but I hear its a naked, pot smoking party, that's family friendly

Eugene is a very beautiful city. In addition to great shopping, live theater, and cultural events. There are miles of bike paths, and lots of city parks. The Willamette river, and the Mckenzie river offer great fishing, kayaking, and boating. The sand dunes at Florence are about 1 1/2 hours away. You can ride for miles along the ocean, and inland. There are also many mountain lakes about 1 1/2 hours away.

Plenty of motocross in Oregon:

Of course, Washougal, probably the picturesque track that holds a National, is not too far away in Washington:

I think years ago Eugene used to be a "hippy haven" but it's grown out of that stage now... even the country fair is more "artsy" than "hippy"... We found Eugene to be very diverse, actually, and now it is growing very rapidly. There is an indoor BMX track there, which is very cool since it "mists" so much during the winter... and also the bike trails are awesome and there's good mountain biking in surrounding areas. Fern Ridge Lake is supposed to be one of the best places to sail in the country (I read it somewhere, I don't sail...) and if you like rivers and lakes there's lots of that, too...

The Dunes that we always went to were in Florence. We would take hwy 126 west from Eugene straight into Florence, turn left at hwy 101 and you'll come up on the Dunes recreation something something (sorry I can't think of the name of the park right now...) on your right. It's SO much fun!!

Here are some links:

for indoor bmx in Eugene:
