Seriously... I never hear people talk about Eastern Europe. Nothing about Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, etc, online or in real life. Are these bad countries to live in? I've read they are second world.

How come you don't search the forum before you ask?
Because there is plenty of threads about eastern Europe.

This forum is full of threads about Eastern Europe. There are two threads on Slovenia alone, not to mention the more general threads on E Europe and Russia. Eastern Europe is a frequent topic of conversation for me and my friends, because we love it. It's "second world" because it was part of the former Soviet bloc. Parts of it are catching up to the developed world, though. And just because it's "second world" doesn't mean it isn't beautiful. I recommend parts of E Europe as a vacation destination to friends and online.

You probably haven't been to the beautiful parts. And you probably don't speak the languages, so you can't get to know people and enjoy the experience on a deeper level.

It's not like it has an LHR, CDG or FRA as an international airport hub. It has only recently emerged from being cloaked in mystery and most people don't want to deal with it, much like many people prefer to avoid Istanbul. It's not on my radar. I don't speak the languages of those places. I like my vacations to be (reasonably) effortless.

He said underrated, not overrated. I agree, it's probably more like the 'old Europe' than the West in many ways too.

Eastern Europe is very much starting to emerge, this year's Euro Championship will help to draw attention to Poland and Ukraine.

I'm currently in Riga and on my way to Vilnius tomorrow.
Does that count?

I have been to the beautiful parts and did learn a language for just that reason, thus, as the other poster said, I consider it underrated, not overrated. I really don't think anyone who's been there could say anything else.
