The same reason why Kazakhstan is not really considered as European, despite a small part being in Europe. It's the Muslim world and Europe is like someone else mentioned here traditionally and culturally Christian. All of Turkey and Kazakhstan may not be practising Muslim, but they are still culturally and traditionally Muslim. And people in those countries looks nothing like other Europeans.

For me, Georgia and Armenia feels (based on the pictures I have seen from there, and their Christian religion and culture) more like Europe than Turkic and Muslim countries like Turkey and Kazakhstan.

... and if I were to believe that Turkey is a European country? Or if I were to believe that Turkish self determination would decide what Turkey would be classed as? Or if I thought that none of the above was applicable?

To say your 'choices' are a little limiting in viewpoint would be flattering.

Where is "Geographically, Turkey is mostly in Asia"? That's not the same as "Turkey is in Eurasia" (duh, France is too).

Ohhh Dunno, I have news for you - that's precisely how the Georgians look, ( including, I bet, the Iberian who opened this thread and who asks all these questions about Turks))))

PS. I am trying to play nicely here, but deep in my heart I side with Iberian of course)))
Islam is the main issue.

Turkey is far more Islamic than Kazakhstan. Islam has over 1000 years old roots in Turkey- or among the Osman tribes. In KZ the Muslim culture lived only between 16-19 centuries. (the soviet system destroyed the Islam in 99,99%) Kazakhstan has also strong non-Islamic nomad tradition even today. However none of them are European countries.

Because it is mostly Islamic.

Nevermind that it has been secular for the past 90 years, Europeans do not want a Muslim majority country to join them, sadly.

Two main reasons I think and despite the political correctness of most Europeans I think it just boils down to the fact that Turkey is... 1) Not physically a part of Europe and... 2) Muslim! Turkey's insistance that it be included in the EU further solidifies people opinions. A small part of turkey may lie inside Europe but the vast majority of it lies in Asia Minor. Not Europe!
