That has been crap since as long as I've lived, because all the really good artists skip it as none of the want their names anywhere near associated with it.(with a few exceptions).
Even my mother who used to love the show and have watched it for decades is getting tired of what it has become
only way it will die is if people rise up and tell their govt.
"The list of countries pulling out of next year’s Eurovision Song Contest is getting longer. 10 countries including Portugal and Poland have said they will not take part. Most blame the financial crisis for their withdrawal..."
European countries are not able financially to organize the Eurovision events while they insist on inviting Ukraine to join the EU
I guess money is just a pretext. Here in Portugal there is quite some contempt for that crap, and rightly so. It has become a freak show and embarrassment, and also a display of "country alliances" and vote fixing. Just like the EU itself Eurovision can't die soon enough. I applaud all countries no longer taking part in that nonsense and investing the money on national events instead.

So the Eurovision is too expensive for a million, but spending billions for EURO 2004 was acceptable?

Are you comparing the Euro cup and its importance with the Eurovision contest? Not saying countries don't spend way too much on football but these two events are worlds apart.
With all these crap talent shows and even crappier expert panels on every channel these days, I believe the appetite for the Eurovision will fade away. The show has run its course. In Norway Eurovision has taken a major nosedive in recent years. The show seems to be big only in parts of Eastern Europe and Sweden of course.

IMO that's the only amusing thing about the contest. That plus tacky Balkan music.
