In case, keep your money hidden (the belt is the best), avoid Rolex/Iphone/Ipad ect to be very viewable.
Yeah, I really worry about my Rolex when I travel. I'm very careful to make sure nobody knows that I have to wear a Rolex.

Yes. They should be safe.

Just do what someone else said- keep all of your valuables on you in such a way that you would have to awaken if they are removed. NOT in your hand or on your lap. Sit on whatever you can sit on. Use your bag as a pillow. Strap your bag to you. Etc.

Yup. Nothing better than arriving drunk at 7am.

Well unless you're travelling to go to a job interview or a funeral or something. Then its probably not the best way. Maybe.

Why would people be coming in and out of the room all night?
The only disturbance would be passport control when you reach national borders.

It is safe although usually nothing beats low cost carriers like Ryanair, Wizzair or Easyjet in price.

I wonder if I fall asleep will someone take my bag? Or will they pick my pocket or threaten me in any way.

Will it be terribly uncomfortable?

Please don't move this to the travel board, this instead is a question about Europe and I want the perspective of Europeans.
I am not European but have taken many night trains in Europe to save money.

Some people have talked about compartments but as you probably know this is more expensive than a regular upright seat in the open coach section. Especially if you have a rail pass of some kind that generally will cover the coach section; for a couchette or sleeper cabin or compartment there is an extra charge that will sometimes be as expensive as a cheap hotel.

As for the coach section, I would not fear for my personal safety at all especially if you are too people.

I've been alone in the coach section at night before but I am a tall and stocky male.

The main potential nuisance is theft but even though the risk is low it really sucks if it happens to you.

One thing I would do is place anything that is critical to not get stolen (passport, credit cards, cash and return plane ticket) on my body as close as possible to my private parts. If anyone tries to go there, you're sure to wake up.

I also brought a padlock and would lock my bag for the night to the luggage rack above my head.

A sleeping compartment is the way to go. Less traffic and mostly quiet. Thieves can't steal what they don't see. If you leave it laying out it will be taken day or night.

TLDR: Yes, it is absolutely safe. No need to be scared. Buen viaje.
