I am not big fan of metal bands but everything goes if "Sound" is suitable to my ears.
Concerning "Pop-culture", I think that on this issue pop-culture covers all, including rock,blues,indie, etc....But sure we have more than metal bands, some examples:
I watched them all and sorry to say those are all copy-cats. Finns wannabe anglo-saxons, but why?
You don't see any value in your own spirit/language/culture and therefore music?

Says who? Just because you don't know much on a subject, apparently, that doesn't mean that that's what it was.

So back to Russian pop-music during Soviet times. There was the music "underground" there - plain and simple, starting probably from the end of the seventies.
The thing is, (as I've already mentioned) practically none of these bands was trying to copycat Western bands, and less of all to sing in English. That wouldn't fly in Russia where the poetry is a big ( if not to say most important part) of songs, so English was not wanted.
So a lot of bands that popped up in the nineties were not indeed new - they were born in the 80ies and simply came from "underground."
I've still found few of them on Youtube - what I could remember of their names;
There was the oldest of them
"The Time machine" ( I think these are still the seventies)
Those are the ones I could think of right away, off top of my mind, but the underground of course was much bigger. So if you are not aware of it, that doesn't mean that there was no Russian rock bands out there back in Soviet times; but they were targeting their own audience first of all, so no English.
I think bards is a little differen. Vysotsky was a good actor. His songs- it is rather rhymed one-man theater.
No, Vysotsky was a bard, a great poet, and a OK actor. ( I saw him in Chekov's "Cherry Orchard" on Taganka ( I think we went with school.))
But his poetry was so enormously gifted, that when he died, Moscow stopped in its tracks, so many people came to say farewell to him, and no police, no Politbureau, no KGB could stop it, they caved in.
Russians know their prophets.
In fact, he was even married to a French actress of Russian descent, and France was the country he traveled to out of all places. So probably he knew where the roots of his art were coming from, even if on subconscious level.
I recall a guitarist friend of mine about 20 years ago who did tours with a band. He said in Sweden and Finland they will not look at you unless you have lines of speakers behind you blasting them to pieces. They went for quality not quality. Many Poles I know in the UK are heavily into heavy metal. That was starting to take over in the communist era. I am not a heavy metal fan at all.

No, Vysotsky was a bard, a great poet, and a OK actor.
Vysotsky did not like, if he was called a bard. He called his song "rhythmic verses." So I think that his performance it is rather one-man show. But also think that any name would be appropriate.

Yes, I know the story of Vysotsky. My father very like his songs. I also like it.

If those songs were copycats, sure you can tell what are orginals songs ?
Concerning anglo-saxons: We have not been russians, we are not russians and we dont want to be russians.
Anglo culture have allways been here much, much stronger than russian culture, no matter what is the name of issue.
Finnish rock have some own elements, one is raw sound of guitar and that is part of finnish spirit in rock and rock is it self as an international language, sure this is same thing with other genres.
You can not say that russian bands/singers are not copy-cats if they are using russian but playing example rock music.
Other thing is language of lyrics, some bands are using english and finnish on lyrics, some are using only finnish and some are using just english and those who are using english, have tours around the world...So lyrics in english is must for some but is not sign that they want to be something else than finnish.
You may write here with russian language and wonder why no one is responding to you...Same thing with english lyrics, english has been and will be international language also on songs, want we or not.
