Do you think Russia - is part of Eastern Europe or not? It is important.
Russia does not seek to catch up with the West in some aspects. The rest of Eastern Europe can not accept this (They are oriented to the West).

You're talking several hundred years where Western Europe has advanced farther than Eastern Europe. Has anything changed fundamentally to change that pattern....not that I'm aware of.

In terms of human rights, almost all Eastern European countries are already on level with Western Europe.

In terms of economy, yeah I do believe Eastern Europe will catch up fully with Western Europe. Countries like Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia etc. are arguably already at the same levels as Western Europe.

Eastern Europe is not a consistent term, at least for me. What countries do you have in mind specifically?

First of all, it depends on your definition of Eastern Europe, i think some countries (Poland, Czech Republic, ecc.) are already catching up but i have never considered them as Eastern European due to cultural and historic reasons.

There are a few countries where it will take a serious effort (mostly in the Balkans) to do so as they are still far from developed status, they might never reach the standards of Western Europe

The only country within the EU (and which could be considered EE by some) I'm worried about is Hungary. It was on a good track, but boy...

^^You are right, the situation there worries me and Orban's popularity surprises me even more, the fact that Jobbik seems close to becoming the second party scares me even more, i don't know why they took this extremist conservative route.

Central Europe as in Czech, Slovak, Poland? Yes.

Eastern as in Hungary, Romania, former Yugoslavia, former USSR Republics? Less obvious.

Baltic states? Less obvious

Russia? Hard to see full catch up, but rate of progress may be matched.

Just a completely gut and anecdotally-based opinion.

S.
