I'm going to Paris next month and thought to do things the old fashioned way, get a laminated map from Amazon and a French phrase book. Then I thought I could use my phone to get around with Google maps, but I don't know if my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 is unlocked or not. I have to visit my local Verizon store to find out. I know I can use it but Verizon wants to charge $25 for 100MB of data. I'm not sure how much data Google maps uses.
I love Paris but I guess I'm spoiled by places like New York or Chicago where the grid system is easy to figure out. Any suggestions for not getting lost in Paris?

Thanks. I used the metro a lot last time I was there in 1997. I was staying farther away from the city center. This time I hope to do more walking and get more exercise.
Yeah, the metro is the obvious thing, OP. it's very efficient and handy. You can walk as much as you want; you can skip a metro stop, and walk to the next one, if you want exercise. Not sure what the problem is, here.....??
Giant SUV will be perfect for Paris. Avoid walking or taking the Metro, no one does that.
I'm not sure I understand the problem. If you could get around in other cities, I'm sure you'll do fine in Paris. Most of NYC isn't even on the grid system, and you said you were fine there. There are maps on the street all over the place (especially next to Metro station entrances).

Public transport, especially the metro or even the RER if you are going to the surrounding metropolitan area. If you managed to get around without a car around Chicago, you also will in Paris given that its public transport system is more extensive.
