As to pepper spray, where can I obtain it? I am only curious how it stinks. Now with many assurances here, I definitely feel more comforted.
Pepper spray is illegal in the Netherlands, as I said. And in Germany it's totally unnecessary to even try to obtain one. You can't use it against humans anyway.
Pepper spray is legal and sold all over but it can only legally be sold as protection from animals. So if you use it against a person it is a violation of the law.
Still for a tourist totally unnecessary. If you make a habit of hanging out late at night in big city's in front of the train station it might not be a bad idea. Germany is still one of the safest places in the world.
Pepper spray is approved only for defence against animals, it can be legally purchased and in self-defence you might legally use it against human beings though, pepperspray and the like is not allowed at public celebrations and the like.

BTW, how would a North American get a bottle of pepper spray onto a plane? Airport security probably wouldn't allow it in checked luggage, either.
Any big city should have a weapons store, even in Germany, but pepper spray might most likely be sold out especially in towns like Cologne or Frankfurt.
Dont be afraid. I have a all paid vacation for my wife and I in May to munich and berlin (10 nights). I was going to cancel it, but after talking to dozens of people that live there. Nothing really has changed....
If you are a woman, you'd be well advised to postpone your trip until the situation in Germany becomes safe again, it is not the case right now.
As a tourist it is very safe in Germany, as a resident it is safe in Germany. The so called danger is way overblown.
