Would that be a pretty average aize in Norway? I think the average American male is 5'9" but weighs 185 pounds. I'm guessing the average waist size in pants here is a 34-36.
Definitely not average height (I only feel average in Southern Europe ). That is around 5'11". Weight: 180 lbs (back i 2003).

i wonder if we controlled for demographics if that would be much different here. Norway has a fairly homoegeneous ethnic population compared to the U.S. Our mix of ethnicities here tends to make averages somewhat meaningless.

But you'd agree that 32" doesn't necessarily carry over to someone who is 6'+, right?
It's only logical that if your body type/frame is the same, someone who is 6' will have a bigger waist than someone who is 5'9", even at an equivalent bodyfat %. No?
Apologies for not clarifying that I was speaking only on my behalf. At 5' 9" and a bodyweight of 165, a 32 inch waist feels right....for me. I will not even venture a guess as to what is best for someone else. If you are happy with your waist size it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
Some people prefer to carry extra muscular bodyweight, even if it means a slightly bigger waist size. For me, carrying extra bodyweight, even if it's rock hard muscle, seems like borderline insanity. I added 15 lbs of extra muscle earlier in my life as stated in #103 , and I learned that it wasn't my cup of tea. I prefer the way I feel at a lower bodyweight with a thinner physique overall, waistline included. But that's just me. Some people are into being B-I-G, just for the sake of being big.
Was 190lbs, 36" waist in April, 2015. Cut out most sugar, caffeine and junkfood in diet and dropped to 175lbs, 32" in 4 months. Drink a lot of water and snack on almonds. Started weight training and conditioning to build stamina, added 10 lbs but maintaining waist size so currently 185lbs, 32". Feel much better, more agile. Age is 50, height is 5' 10'.
I know this question and discussion is old but wanted to give you my thoughts.
I believe there is no ideal male waist size. Height, your body typie/build, and your genetics is what determines people's waist size.
I am. a 6 feet 4 inch tall man. I weigh around 210 pounds currently with a 36-37 inch waist. I have a small belly but I am by no means fat or overweight. I have broad shoulder and I am strong as I strength train.
I used to weigh 185-190 with a smaller belly and I had a 35-36 inch waist. I was not as strong. I prefer the extra weight and increased strength.

I agree, guys shouldn't waste their time worrying about waist size.

Having a belly does not give you extra strength.
BTW, I'm 6'4", around 214. My waist is up to 36". I had been 34" to 35" for decades. I hate the gut I'm getting and hope to get down to 200 lbs. and a 34" waist.
My more pressing concerns would be additional muscle growth (weight) in my back as well as in my legs.
