I've always had one or two pairs of athletic shoes I wear around that look clean, and I have another pair that I wear on rainy days that look a little worn out from the elements. I don't ever think to put them in the washer. When shoes get a little worn, they become my rainy day pair. When the rainy day pair gets even older, they become my yard work pair. There's a process.

A magic eraser can work wonders too for those of you worried about putting your shoes in the mashing machine.

I have washed them for years in the washing machine. Never a problem and they always come out clean. Now my problem is that they are in the washer (7:00 pm) and I need them for a 9:30 am training session. I threw my kids sneakers in the washer and dryer all the time as well as my cheap sneakers. Now that I have a decent pair to workout in, I am afraid to throw them in the dryer. I don't want to go to the gym in really cold weather with wet shoes in the morning.

You know who came up with this you can't wash "tennis shoes" in the washing machine right?? The shoe companies, they want you to buy new ones every few months instead of washing them and them lasting a year or two. Years ago when I wore them regularly I washed them every couple months and they lasted a long time(yes, they were leather).

I don't get paying two or three hundred for a pair just because some jock has their name on them.

I've washed my tennis shoes in the washing machine w/ warm water for years......with no pillow case. I tie the laces tight or remove and hand wash them with bleach. Dry it all in the sun. Works beautifully every time. You can dry in dryer on low heat (as I do in the Winter), but NEVER on high heat, or you'll find your tennis shoe in 3 perfect sections like mine were. (The tread, the foamy part between the sole and shoe, and the top part of the shoe).

Waist packs and backpacks handle a washing machine scrubbing well too.

I've found out now that I've upped my outdoor fitness, these can get sweaty as footwear.

I didn't realize that this was even a controversy. Mom threw mine in the washer when they were called "tennis shoes" and "sneakers" over 60 years ago. I've always done the same thing even the pricey ones. No problem at all.
