In North Dakota last night...

-20F to -34F in parts.

The -34F was in the southern most tip (Whapeton), which means Minnesota, South Dakota and likely Iowa were also in the -20F range or less.

Another problem is the 45 inches of snow covering the prairie already. The way things are going, we are on pace to smash snowfall records for the year. The previous record, in 1997, created severe flooding that destroyed most of the Grand Forks area (pop. 100k) and most of the Fargo area (pop 120k.) Severe flooding was also a problem back in 1993. The floods destroyed agriculture for the year as well. Weather experts claim the snow moisture content is low, but I'm skeptical, and looking for high ground.

Hangin' out around Fairbanks sounds like a nice vacation from this mess down here.

Ray great pics as usual. If anyone is around one of the many temperature signs, can you get a pic showing the temp < -40? When I was there, the coldest I got pic wise was -37 on the alaska usa building.

I will give it a try tomorrow or the day after (this cold front is being replaced by another next week). I was thinking about that today, but there was so much ice fog out there and so cold, that I decided to stay warm in the car

Ah, Fairbanks weather will stick around quite consistently. Winters here last months more than those in the lower-48.

Yea, I remember that ice fog, it gets pretty thick and tough to drive in. Thats one thing I dont miss about Alaska is driving in fairbanks. I dont know how you guys ever get used to that... I was always afraid of not being able to stop in time and hitting someone.
