I was just wondering if it is possible, especially in the winter. Have any of you done it? Thanks in advance!

I lived in Salcha for 20 years. Initially I worked at Eielson, but spent 14 years working in Fairbanks. I knew of several others doing the same thing.

I'll tell you how I handled it. A couple of simple rules: 1) do not pass anyone on the two lane portion of the road, and 2) do not change lanes if slowing down will suffice. I did a couple of other things too, which were intended to make for a stress free drive that was never ever rushed. I always left about 40 minutes sooner than it was expected to take for the drive, and then spent 30+ minutes having a meal and reading the newspaper just before work.

When I worked evening shifts I'd stop in North Pole for that. But when I worked day shift there was another problem, which is the traffic congestion from Badger Road to Fairbanks. To avoid that I would drive straight into town, thus almost always arriving 30-40 minutes ahead of the traffic rush. I'd then have breakfast and read the paper about 1 block from work. That meant the only serious time constraint that I ever experienced was watching the clock to make sure that I was headed for work at 7:58!

No accidents, though I was forced to drive into the snow in the center median once to avoid a guy who was spinning out in front of me.
