I think people have this idea that the fashions of the 90s were more or less identical to the ones in the new millennium. Sure a few 90's things have stubbornly persisted into very recent times (baggy pants) or even the present day (sagging), but the more I look back at fashion from the 90s the more well, 80s it seems. Particularly up to 1994 or so, but even a lot of late 90s fashions look pretty weird and kitschy by today's standards. I think people looked very sloppy back then. I think in some ways fashion is kinda frozen in the early 2000s, but 90s fashion increasingly looks like a toned down form of 80s fashion.

Also tattoos and piercings were already becoming popular in the 90s, but not nearly to the extent they are today. Nowadays I'd say most people have either a tattoo or a non-conventional body piercing, back in the 90s at most you'd have a belly button or nose ring and a couple small tats, you didn't have people like Cher Lloyd who tat their entire bodies and are still considered beautiful. Only Dennis Rodman did that. In that sense today's fashion is a lot weirder.

The "sloppy" look you reference was related to the grunge movement. I'm one of those Gen Xers who never changed. I still wear flannels, plain t-shirts, and maintain an unkempt appearance (as much as I can with a real job now).

It's still convenient and cheap. That never goes out of style in my book.

Where I lived in the 90s (California and Las Vegas) tattoos totally took over by the 90s.

I know, 90's fashion was weird as hell, especially the early 90's. Some of the bright colors and terrible sweaters people thought were cool ...

At least things kept changing back then. People dress the same in 2014 as they did in 2004. We never had such long stretches of no change before.

True, fads tend to start in California and spread to other parts of the country. I doubt that 1/3 of young adults even in Cali had tats by the '90s, though. That's the stats today for the US.

Yes it's quite odd. Today's fashion is very different from even 1998, but barely distinguishable from say 2003. Only difference I can think of is that tats, blue jeans and piercings have become even more common, teenage girls seem to wear more makeup and you had that emo/scene look going on for a few years that's kinda died out.

I just watched a movie set in the early 90s, and we were commenting about how none of the clothes were right. None of the girls were wearing vests, or baby doll dresses with boots, or really heavy eyebrows or dark lipstick.

Early 90's was all about oversized earth tones. There were a lot of Birkenstocks about, sometimes with socks!
