Any denim I wear with any frequency, regardless of color or depth of dye, fade fairly quickly. The only way I've found to extend the life of a dark denim wash is to wear sparingly and/or wash sparingly.
That's true, they're not quite as versatile. Another drawback in my opinion is that they don't look nearly as good when they fade as blue jeans do.
Yeah, after just a few washes, they look gray. I've had black 501s in the past, but didn't wear them for years and tried not to wash them much. For some reason, the fade just isn't as nice as with blue.

Yeah, for my nicer jeans, I wash them very sparingly- maybe every dozen wearings or so- and only inside out, by hand, using a moderate amount of Woolite Dark, and then hang dry. They will never see a washing machine until they're eventually faded/worn.
Living in Idaho, I don't really care what is "in" or "hideous". We are pretty laid back folks here. I wear jeans to work every day, and I work in a real estate office. Some of those jeans are black.
As a woman, I prefer Gloria Vanderbilt brand, and they stay very black.

Interesting. It's nice to come across a fellow Idahoan!
Only if you don't laugh- it's difficult to get stuff I like around here...
I have DKNY, Ralph Lauren, and Bubblegum.
Possibly a couple of others in the back of closet!!
Yes, I prefer Levi's... but it hadn't occurred to me to try mailorder.
I almost bought some 517s today. Not black though. I'll have to give them a try.
