Depends on the drape of the shawl.

I worked different shawls for different occasions. For at-home use, I'll use up scrap yarn and make it thick. I used to carry a lighter weight shawl on me so I didn't freeze in the movie theater or church.

I think they are elegant, and I was admiring a shawl worn by a stylish young coworker today, so I certainly don't think wearing them makes anyone seem old. I lack the skill to drape them properly and the grace to wear them without looking ridiculous, so they're not for me, though.

I have been making and wearing shawls and capes for years and I currently have 4 ready to give away.

Love them! Perfect for commuters and for flights. They are light, fold up into nothing, and keep you warm and cuddly when needed.

I haven't tried a shawl yet because I am short and think it makes me look shorter/fatter

I got a nice Pashmina shawl at a thrift store for $1. Just the right weight and warmth when I get a bit chilly sitting on the sofa.

On the (tall, skinny) models they always look amazing and elegant.
A long time ago, a coworker went to her country and brought me back a shawl. It was so warm and gave me a lot of room to wrap. I have wide shoulders. I lost it during my last move. When I try on shawls from stores, even higher end ones (I'd be willing to invest in a high quality ones) they're always long, but not wide. It looks like a stole on me.
