FYI, I know this might sound like fear mongering, but:
if you shop at second hand stores, before you try anything on, check the clothing for bed bugs hidden in the folds and inside along the seams.
A friend of mine ended up with them from our local second hand store when she tried on a few sweaters. She alerted the store of course but I'm not sure what action was taken, if any.
Now I look like an inspector when I'm looking at trying on clothes there.
I am totally paranoid about bedbugs. If it's not washable in hot water I don't buy it, except a few things. If not washable I put in dryer for 1/2 hour on high heat. If washable it goes straight to wash machine and then dryer. This is of course after a thorough inspection before it goes in house. The bags they came in go straight to outside garbage can. I really should inspect the clothes before trying on.
I recently went to JC Penney and they were having a 60% off sale for their brands. I got a coat, a Jean jacket, two pairs of jeans, two blouses, a sweater and a pair of boots for around $250.00.
I do not wash anything in hot water and chlorine bleach unless I detect a funky odor in the washer. I only use hot water for some white or whitiish toweling. Thise items are the only things I use a hot dryer on. I would not treat silk the way you describe; I have a beautiful silk shirt waiting for Christmas. You would recommend drying it on high? That would ruin it. By the tag on it, it must have been dry cleaned and not subsequently worn. I sometimes buy wool garments at the GW. I would never treat them the way you recommend.
I take it you are highly concerned about bed bugs, and I think you make a good point. Don’t buy anything that is not clean, and look it over really, really well before buying. If something at or from the thrift store is infested, report this to the local health department!
You have got me thinking about infestation, though. Maybe I’ll ask GW how they inspect clothing before putting it on the sales floor.
