For the record I am in my 20s. Do you think for a woman my age there are certain patterns or tops to avoid looking matronly? Reason I ask is because I have a few longer type outfits that have floral patterns but one of my friends was saying they're more for older women and makes me look really matronly. I am admittedly not very fashion conscious lol.

Florals are tough. It really depends on the floral and how it's being deployed. Some florals look very matronly or dated. Others are very trendy and current, especially on flowy boho-type tops.

Unfortunately, I can't really describe the difference or what makes a floral lean matronly (other than saying that if it looks like something worn on "The Golden Girls," it's too matronly. LOL)

Cuts and fabrics are more the culprit than patterns, IMO.

Things that consciously seek to conceal curves(boxy, oversized, non-draping tops, etc.) are often frumpy and matronly. Broomstick pleated peasant skirts on anybody who isn't very slim and willowy in build generally look matronly. Elastic waist anything runs the risk of looking matronly. Loafers often look matronly.

I really don't understand why floral patterns are viewed as so "matronly".

You are in your twenties. No way you can look "matronly." Perhaps some people may see a particular print or pattern of dress on you and think it belongs on a much older women, but that does not make you look "matronly" in any way, shape, form or manner.

That label will be stuck in the minds of some people because they are riveted to certain fashion BS, the reality is that you are in a young woman and no piece of fabric can make you look "matronly."

I think floral prints look elderly, so I avoid them.....even though I’m practically elderly.

Like was mentioned it really depends on the top. It's more the cut of an item than the print IMO. Nothing makes a woman look frumpier than wearing a boxy, no shape top or dress. Big floral prints remind me of people on vacation in Hawaii or the tropics more than elderly people.

I agree, I'm middle-aged, and I avoid almost all "flower" prints. I actually avoid wearing a lot of "prints" in general, preferring mostly solid colors, and even then staying away from what I think of as "candy colored" pastels.

Other things that I think look "matronly" are those dresses with short sleeved jackets, anything with "holiday" motifs (snowmen, pumpkins, etc), and matching "embroidered denim" outfits.

I think it would take a lot for a 20 something to look matronly, though.
