I rarely see guys wearing them, but im sure some people do, somewhere. As a guy, I've always found them to be rather unflattering and banal as an outer garment on any guy I see wearing it and as such would never wear one. That being said, people can of course wear whatever they want.
When I was young, they were called "athletic undershirts" or "A-shirts."
The term "wifebeater shirt" got coined some time around 2000.
I think the term is more classist than misogynist, in reference to such shirts being worn by working-class men, and working-class men being stereotyped as "wifebeaters."
We just called them "sleeveless undershirts" or "old man undershirts" until around 1970, when they started coming in colors other than white and being referred to as "tank tops" or "muscle shirts".
They are also referred to as "tank tops" in this list of "The 5 T's of Snakebite Envenomation" that I saw on an ER workers' web site -
The 5 T's of Snakebite Envenomation:
Toothless
Tattoos
Tank top
Arrived at hospital in pickup Truck
InToxicated
Back when I was on OurTime (dating for people 55+) looking for dates a few of the guys wore them in their profile pics- and believe me, it was NOT to show off superb arm musculature. I have no idea what they were thinking.
