Tell you what, I have seen the same amount of good looking "obese" people as I have of the Heroin-chic models that weigh 70 pounds. What IS ugly is the tone of your shallow and pedantic post.
Wow, someone's got a stick up their rear!! Taking care of yourself does NOT mean sticking your kids with the babysitter and spending all day every day shopping .

Your clothes, your look, and your overall care for yourself are your first form of communication to the rest of the world. You have to wear something. Taking care of your kids does not mean you have to turn into a big fat slob. As a matter of fact, that's a poor message to send to your kids. Likewise dressing well does not mean you neglect them either.

People in this country have no dignity, no sense of style, and no vanity and that's a shame.

While I do not at all agree with theroc5156, I do have to say that I have the exact same opinion of you. This is an awfully broad and incorrect statement to make. I have been to Europe extensively, usually for 4-5 weeks at a time and in general people are pretty much the same. If you are comparing people in London or Paris to people in rural Arkansas (and I am not picking on AK, just picked the first state that came to mind), then you are comparing apples to oranges. People outside of the large cities in Europe are just as casual as people outside the large cities of the US.

Trust me, I have seen plenty of people in England and France that seem to have no dignity, no sense of style, and no vanity with bad teeth to go along with it!

heh
Americans did invent blue jeans and the t-shirt, which, for better or for worse, the rest of the world embraced.

I do think we were already a bit on the casual side, and let things get even more so. I thought baseball caps were for young people, not 50 year old men.
It's one thing to be informal, but do we need to be infantilized?

I also agree that there is a difference between trendy and stylish.

As for the rest of the world dressing casually outside of big cities, no doubt this is true, but I think we in the States have cornered the market on extra poundage.

After doing a little detective work, I see that the OP is 17 years old. Perhaps she's never even picked up a bag of groceries, let alone pushed a stroller with one baby in it.

When I was in Europe, I did not see many obese people, though statistically, obestiy is a problem there, too. Nor did I see many "fashionably" dressed people there. Maybe fewer people in jeans, but that's about it. I was in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, in the cities of Antwerp, Amsterdam and Cologne.

Obesity is not healthy, but neither is it a character flaw, as some seem to imply. (Not you)

The point is, I care about how I look and it just makes me happier knowing that I am in great physical, mental and spiritual shape.
I'm glad for you, but I'll issue a little warning. I'm a nurse and I've seen people whose self-image is all wrapped up in their physical body have a hard time when their body no longer does what they want it to. I'm not just talking about the elderly (though that is a significant group), I'm actually talking more about people in car accidents, etc, who suddenly become para/quadriplegics, things like that. Focusing so much on a great bod can really trip you up if/when you no longer have it.

The only time I wear heels to the supermarket is when I go there right after church. Then again, I wear scrubs and Danskos to work, so if I go after work, that's what I've got on.

Seriously, this is Austin. If you wear heels to the grocery store, you are the odd girl out!
Boulder is probably worse! And the produce guy graduated from high school with my daughter!

My wife (who is Russian) said "why is everyone so frumpy looking tonight and not in their normal Big Sunglasses and Gucci clutches?" thats when an employee said that Illinois is in town.
We ahve some Russian (from Russia) parents in the pediatric practice where I work; they dress like all the other Coloradans, which is to say, "casual" at best. Re: Illinois: My first husband went to the University of Illinois, and my brother was at Penn State at the same time. My parents came to visit us in Champaign, and they thought the students at Ill dressed "better" than the PSU students. Granted, this was more in the hippie era, but the midwest has always been known as a more conservative dressing place. My DH of 28 yrs is from Omaha, NE and I always tease him about dressing in "early Omaha" style. You will not see him with an untucked shirt, a collarless shirt, tennis shoes at the office (though it is OK in Boulder), etc.

not so fast there jenrandomnumbers. i didn't say anything about any foreigners. i was talking about 'mericans. there's people in my office that look like they pulled their clothes straight out of the dirty laundry bin. and when i wear a tie some people look threatened. plus when i go to the big cities the majority rule still fits. i was in downtown milwaukee last week actually. chicago's not much better. however, madison usually has some style.

and if i go to london or paris or the scottish countryside in the near future, i'll be sure to give my opinion of them too

I know there are 5 billion more important issues than this, but what is your opinion?

My opinion: We have an attitude where we think we are too good to care what others think... which is good in some ways, however I think it's also important to follow trends or at least look presentable.

The soccer mom style has torn American fashion apart... European mothers all follow the style and you see them wearing high heels on cobblestone streets while pushing their child's stroller. Yeah, that's going a little too far, but I'm sure you smell what I'm stepping in right lol?

Also, we are one of the fattest countries in the world... and well, most obese people don't follow the trends as they don't cater to their weight... And honestly, when you're obese, you probably aren't so good looking.

When I lived in the UK, I asked people who have visited the US what was some cultural shocks they found. The main one I heard was some of the extremely obese people (they've never even seen a 300 pound person) and how so many people don't follow the fashion and look sloppy. You know... the running sneakers, husky stretchable shorts, and t-shirt.
Sloppy IS the fashion. It's called loose, laid-back, relaxed, deconstructed. Also, when I see Europeans in L.A. they looked overdressed, kind of 1980's and kind of tacky. That Euro-trash look is nothing to write home about.
