This portrait of Rebecca Gratz was done by Thomas Sully. Rebecca was considered the most beautiful woman in America in the early 19th Century, many artists came to paint her portrait, she had many suitors, and it is believed Washington Irving was infatuated with her and Sir Walter Scott modeled his character "Rebecca" after her in the novel "Ivanhoe." Devoutly Jewish, she chose not to marry outside her religion and established the very first Hebrew school in America. She is beloved here in Philadelphia - she is one of Philly's favorite daughters and has a school named after her and other honors - because although she was wealthy and privileged she devoted her life to charities and helping the poor.
