I bought my beta fish about 2 weeks ago and so far so good.
I have him in a 1 gallon bowl and have been doing a 50% water change once a week. Is this the right amount of change to be doing?
Should i be changing it MORE frequently. The water is always clear and i've never had algae. It is NOT located near a windo and we only have a light on him in the daytime not nighttime.
Okay, thanks. I never though i'd be so attached to a fish!! haha. I took him home becuase no one would buy him as he jumped into a chiclid tank and got his fins eaten off, but they've grown back wonderfully and now he looks good!!!
I have mine in a 55gallon with 3 goldfish and a pleco.
Dispite what you may have heard, betta's CAN live with some other non-aggressive fish, such as goldfish =)
i actually wasnt even sure until you asked me,then looked it up online....everyone whos tried it said theyve had good luck with the bamboo being totally submerged....its been a couple weeks since ive put them in there, and no sign of rotting [yet]....i bought the stalks at a flea market they have at the state fairgrounds $12 for 7 of them.....was a lot better than the $10/each stalks they were selling at petsmart!!

If you are not using a filter, you can change ALL the water if you like. Just be sure to use CR or water conditioner, and let the new bowl water sit a bit to get to room temperature before you pop him back in.
Yes, be sure you add a water conditioner along with your partial water changes, to get rid of the chlorine. Chlorine is toxic to fish. And you are in Ct., so unless you keep your heater on pretty high during the winter, you might want to think about getting a small heater for your betta. They do best in warmer temps. Years ago when my dd had a betta, we had it in a bowl and it died during the winter. I learned from that mistake, and later got a beautiful betta and put him in a 2 1/2 gallon filtered/heated tank where he lived for a few years. Then I moved him into a 10 gallon with some guppies, and he did fine in there. (no nipping, although some males can be quite the fighter) He died of old age last year. I'm not trying to be the "betta police", I just want to point out that they are healthier with heat. You could upgrade to a small aquarium and get a small heater, or you could find a tiny heater made just for fish bowls. They do make them.

Don't you need some of the water to keep the good bacteria and such that has established the tank?
