Hi all

Looking to move out west from Ohio, had enough of winters. Looking for around the Cottonwood area, I am flexible to other areas AROUND Cottonwood also. I am a nurse---home care and hospice experience.

Any comments on the job situation for someone with my back ground?

Can one find a decent home for 75 to 100 K, more out in the country?

thanks

Cottonwood has one large hospital and another fairly large one in Sedona, both operated by Flagstaff Medical Center. 75-100K might get you a very small, old home in Old Town Cottonwood, or a trailer on an acre, but it'd be a fixer-upper at very best.

They are high, an average is beyond me to provide. Our rates have quadrupled in about 10 years; gone up while property values dropped. Two examples. I have one house on an acre and a quarter valued currently at about 240K, taxes are 1400 a year plus or minus. I have a 43 acre property that has an ag exemption, taxes are a small fraction of the residential rate.

Short answer to your questions is, this is not a cheap place to live.

Cottonwood has a very nice hospital with friendly staff. My wife has done travel nursing for several years so she has a lot compare too and Cottonwood is up there with the best of them. An option I would highly consider if I was you would be seasonal RN positions. These positions are usually 3-6 months long, they include furnished housing or a stipend of 800$ to $1500 a month, plus higher hourly wages than full time employees usually $35 + an hour. On top of this, if you are a good nurse they almost always offer you a full time contract at the end of the seasonal position including a relocation and a sign on bonus. Hardly a bad deal. Almost every area has these seasonal positions including Cottonwood, Prescott, Flagstaff, Show Low, Tucson, etc. Arizona is so diverse and you might find out after 3 months that you like Prescott or Flagstaff better. These seasonal jobs are directly offered through the hospital so you cut the travel nurse middleman out. I hate even posting this online for everyone to see because my wife and I love going to Alaska for the summer knowing that there will be good RN jobs in arizona waiting for when we return. Just Google Arizona seasonal RN jobs and see what you find.

Also to the add to the acreage being expensive, this is true for all areas in northern Arizona anywhere near anything resembling a population center. If you want nice acreage in Arizona in 2014 you must pay for it whether other is cash, questionable neighbors and trailers, or mind blowing commutes down dirt roads. My wife and I chose the mind numbing commute. We have an internet business plus she works only 2 days a week and has a place to stay in town. For this trade off we got 43 acres with good well depths, beautiful mountain views with heavy tree cover. It also backs state land on two sides with that state land backing 1.2 million acres of national forest. Buying anything comparable within 15 even 30 minutes of any of the nice northern Arizona towns would cost a fortune. Also most of the cheap land you see is cheap for a very good reason, either impassable roads, no utilities of any kind for miles, no water, questionable neighbors, and sometimes all of the above. Buyer beware.

I disagree with this and I live here...compared to other places this is a very inexpensive place to live.

I do think that 75 - 100 k will be difficult to find but on a nurse's salary he should be able to afford a bit more which will buy something decent.

OP, are you over 55? There are a number of nice over 55 mobile home parks. Also you can compare the cost of living here with where you're coming from online on another site (I'm not allowed to mention it here but you can pm me if you want it).

Default thanks for the input

Thanks for all the input. I would not mind a bit of a commute to work in exchange for a nice place to live. I want to be more away from noise and neighbors. Anyone have any experience or know about Hospice nursing jobs? That is my specialty area.

thanks again

You should have no problem finding a hospice or home health nursing job. A large number of retired people move here every year and all will eventually require care. I would look around online and you should be able to find something. Don't rule out Prescott, it's just on the other side of the mountain. There are more people so possibly more nursing needs. I have ran into several people who commute from cottonwood to Prescott, although I don't recommend it for everyone.
