We're house-hunting and frankly stumped by this flat-topped tree:

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It's an out-of-focus tree.

I am willing to bet it is flat-topped because of pruning, not growth habit.

No, I don't think it's been pruned. The owners use this as a second home and as far as I can tell, don't spend any money on landscaping. (Most of the back yard, nearly 2/3 of an acre, is dirt. Just dirt.)

But thanks for pointing out it's blurry, Captain Obvious.

To me it does look like a pruned Juniper Tree though I don't see any berries on it. It may not have been trimmed in a good while but it would explain the funky shape. Plus you can see wood laid out and like at one point there was some sort of landscaping plan though that might have gone by the way side some years ago. The green parts and the stock look Juniper. Google for verification.

You might be right about that. Juniper is incredibly common here. If it is, I wouldn't feel bad about having it removed.

Thanks.

Beautiful view by the way, if you are moving there you are blessed. I prefer the pines but I could very much handle waking up and drinking my first cup of coffee looking at that mountain view.

hideously pruned juniper or pinyon so the view could be preserved (or recovered), I'd guess......cut that thing down and put it out of its misery....holy cow

I guess I owe an apology to rational1...now that you've said that, I see exactly what you mean.

Yes, obviously pruned for the view. Looks like a Shaggy (aka Utah) Juniper. Makes great firewood.
