For a middle class person, which "major" city is the best to live in the state? You should take into consideration; job market, affordability, crime, suburbs, beaches, education etc.

Cape Coral/Fort Myers and Gainesville don't go with the other choices.

Jacksonville in my opinion. It has the best job market of the big cities in the state and the lowest cost of living of all them as well. The area has nice beaches, good schools (St Johns County is #1 in the state with both Nassau County and Clay County among the top dozen school districts in the state), many safe/low crime areas to live in and nice suburbs that fit all the prior criteria such as Ponte Vedra, St John's, Fernandina Beach, Yulee and Orange Park.

OP - Your going to find so many different reasons why one city is better than another. Everyone is different and likes different things. I personally couldn't live in Sarasota, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Ft. Myers or Gainesville just too small for me ... You will find people who love these cities and would prefer them over South Florida (West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami). Orlando gets way to hot in the summer time so I couldn't live there, as it doesn't get the sea breeze. Tampa I hear good and bad things about, a little to conservative for my tastes, but I probably could live there.

So you can see how everyone is different, and their opinion of where in Florida is the best place to live all depends.
