Hey everyone. My wife and myself are thinking about moving to Florida, but we need some help because we are not sure where. I figured I would throw out some details about us, and see what kind of feedback you all can provide.

We currently live in NYC, and are in our early 30s. We live in a high-rise building and like living in the city, so we were maybe considering Miami. We do however have our reservations about Miami, as our party days are behind us and we were really hoping for something a little more quiet and maybe a little more mature. But with that said, not too old. We like to shop and go out, so we would like a place that has nice high-end restaurants and stores (I can convince my wife on any place that has a Louis Vuitton close by). We would also like a place that is close to the water, as opposed to the middle of the state.

Now, for bonus points, I would love to find a place that isn't flat. Ideally I would like to build a home, and I would like to find some land that would allow me to build on the side of a hill. And if it is close to the water, or has a view of the water, even better. I understand that it might be a pipe dream in Florida, but I figured I would throw it out there, who knows. And for extra bonus points, my wife is Filipino and I would be curious if anyone has any details around Filipino communities in Florida.

One big reason that we are considering Florida is because of the cheaper taxes. I don't know the whole story around the taxes in Florida, so if someone has any advice I would appreciate it. We make around $300k-$350k per year. In full disclosure, politically we are Libertarian, if that makes any difference.

As far as budget, we have a pretty wide range to work with, probably anywhere between 750k - 1.5m. I of course would like to stay as low as possible, but we have some wiggle room.

Thank you all in advance for your help!

The Brickell neighborhood in Downtown Miami is the only place in the state that would fulfill your criteria other than being hilly (which barely exists in FL and not on the coast) or being able to build as it's an already built-out area of highrise construction. Despite TV/film portrayals of life in Miami, it's not one big party. Miami is a major world class city with a large population of working professionals, especially in the Downtown area.

Fl isn't bad for a libertarian actually although I'd argue co is probably better. FL is fiscally conservative and socially moderate and a bonafide"purple" state

Norfolk, or Virginia beach might make sense. There is a Louis Vaton, you are right by the ocean, and there are some huge malls. It also isn't that expensive there.

It's probably Miami or bust for you. You can get rid of the hill dream though. The Brickell area is high end, full of professionals and a good walking neighborhood and even one of the few food public transit areas of Miami. It's right on the bay and 15-20min drive to the beach. As for homes, real estate is expensive here espcially near or on the water. Brickell and Downtown is only getting better too with some great projects being built.

As for taxes there is no state income tax in Florida but property taxes are not cheap. With your income you can enjoy Miami plenty. And Miami is not all about partying.
