Idiots with agenda win elections all the time and with HOAs, they're empowered to **** with your life and make you dance to their tune.

What a sad, sad situation.
If I didn't like it, I'd move. It's always an option.

It's an academic option. There's always an academic option.
In reality, when someone purchases a home, 'move' is cheap and easy to say but a major disruption of their lives and an awful thing to have to do because some aged former trophy wife who lacks meaningful things in her own pathetic, daily existence decides to occupy her ample free time by perverting the Home Owners Association to forcibly impose her own skewed 'vision' onto the neighbors.

We come back to the original point.

You move into a community with a HOA, that's your decision. The rules that are in place, I have no sympathy for people who sign up for rules they then choose not to live by. That's their own problem.

The rub is when HOAs become a place for housewives and hags to annoy their neighbors with 'rules' that they fabricate out of thin air.

Google 'shooting at homeowners association' to see what happens when HOA turds dig in and screw with the wrong people. Happens with enough regularity that people who don't have much of an appetite for being told what to do by idiots should avoid buying in a community that has one. The people who actually 'prefer' living like that deserve to live like that.

Interesting, we have no females serving on our board, only the committees. Two board members are retired from executive positions, a third is retired from a major brokerage, and the other two are both employed in management capacities. No bored housewives here, and the only people who have a problem with the rules here are the deadbeats who don't pay dues and have their cable cut off.

Who cares what the geezers did before retirement? Does it make them more capable if they're retired executives instead of bus drivers, teachers or car salesman?

In some cases, yes. My association is a large master with five separate subs. There are almost 1000 homes and extensive facilities. We employ our own property management and maintenance staff and have numerous long term and in a couple of cases, complex, contracts with vendors. So yes, having management skills, understanding of HR laws, the ability to read financials and understand contract law are important skill sets that many people wouldn't have. One woman ran for the HOA last year, her resume consisted of having good baking skills and raising a couple kids. Seriously, how will that benefit the HOA?

My home is as much of an investment as my investment accounts. I wouldn't have someone whose only experience managing money was writing a check to pay for the groceries any more than I would want that person managing the multi-million dollar HOA budget every year.

Ok, I can see your point in that regard.

On the flip side there are also plenty of good HOAs run by dedicated and well-intentioned homeowners who simply want to preserve what they've bought into by preventing people who don't wish to abide by communal rules from trashing the place.

I'd rather have a strict HOA over a community which doesn't care too much any day.

Funnily enough it's very often the biggest moaners about HOAs who take the least interest in the well-being of their community.

I have NEVER heard of the inside paint needing to be approved. To be honest, I question the legality of that.
