While there may be lots of wealthy retirees in Collier and Palm Beach Counties, most of the retirees living in Florida are working to upper-middle class. These are the folks that *need* to reside in a low-tax state like Florida during retirement in order to maximize their retirement income and preserve their savings.

Most truly wealthy American retirees skip right over Florida and opt for more upscale places like San Diego or Hawaii instead. Mitt Romney, who recently purchased a coastal home in San Diego County, is a good example.

You see, wealthy folks don't so much care about how much money they'll pay in state income taxes. Instead, they'd prefer to be in places that are upscale and will suit their lifestyles. Lots of wealthy people are healthy and outdoorsy, so places like San Diego, Hawaii, Tahoe, Aspen, Sedona, et al. are more conducive to those types of lifestyles than Jupiter or Naples.

Well of course!! The wealthy like to be around each other so they can tell each other about their huge houses, high prices cars, how they love to spend money, etc etc. Only other wealthy people can relate to it and are the only ones willing to listen to it. They listen so they can say "mine is bigger than yours".
