Are you actually going to farm or you just want a place with a huge land area.? The Gainesville/ Ocala area might be something you might want to look into.

You do not need a "huge land area" to farm in Florida - the weather is conducive to farming almost year round. Do you know anything about farming? (Doesn't sound like you do.)

What you have to worry about is being near a market - large town/city you can have customers in - if you are hoping to be organic and charge a premium for your product, you need to be near a well-to-do town/city with a professional well-to-do clientele. The problem with being close to a well-to-do population center is the price of land - it increases with the proximity - there also may be zoning and other laws you have to look into and you may be subject to water limits and regulations you have to look into. In my opinion being within an hour of a population center but out in the country is the best setting price/practicality-wise.

There are many considerations when buying land for a farm, I would suggest starting with a book such as "Finding your place in the country" (http://www.amazon.com/Finding-Buying.../dp/0793141095).

Before moving down from NYC, my uncle bought a 10 acre parcel in zip code 32736 and got a 3000sqft home built on it.
It's very quiet -- very quiet -- away from civilization, gets a visit from furry friends on occasion, and he can practically do as he pleases there.
In addition, it is right off of SR44 and is only an hour from Daytona and an hour from Orlando.
Check it out.
I'm sure there are several more lots for sale out there. You're planning on doing the exact same thing he did. He loves it.

I second the Gainesville/Ocala area. Lots of land, farmers markets and organic grocery stores, with a built in client base of students & faculty from UF. We moved up from South Florida and I can't believe how tasty the produce is up here. Check into Newberry, Alachua, Archer, Micanopy, Williston, Ft. White and High Springs, to name just a few of the small towns in the area.

I guess it depends on your budget but I live in the Sarasota/Bradenton area and you don't need to go very far to the east to find larger lots (5-10+ acres) that are zoned for agricultural use. The benefit is that you won't be all that remote from things that are important (medical, highways, airports, shopping, entertainment, etc.) but you will be remote enough to enjoy the benefits of a country lifestyle.
