I think it defeats the purpose of moving.
I'm leaving NY to get away from NY.
Sucks when people move to a different place and then try to turn that place into exactly the same place they left. Or, complain about how this or that just isn't the same or whatever.
If it's that bad then go back.

People move to florida for the weather. They want all the conveniences of "home" but dont want to look hard to find them. If we didnt have the nice weather or the invention of air condition nobody would move here.

I think it's more than just the weather.
Most of the NE has decent weather. For the most part it's really just 3 months of truly horrid conditions. I wear shorts everyday until at least 2nd week of December and they are on again in March. I do not wear a jacket ever, aside from when I am actually outside shoveling snow.
People think I'm nuts because it'll be 20 degrees out and I'm in a t-shirt. Don't get me wrong, I hate the cold and winter, really hate it, but I don't think its that bad overall.

Alot of transplants on CD say they are moving because they cant hack those 3 months of horrid conditions. Im sure other factors play in like state tax, family ,etc but when I talk to someone who is moving from the NE the first thing they usually cite is weather.

It's definitely a top 5 reason. Then they move and can't hack the 12 months of sunshine, heat and humidity. Ha ha!

Many of the people I know that have made the move or thinking of the move usually state the economics and the plus factor is the weather.

55+ - weather
35-55 - family/cost of living/quality of life
< 35 - job, personal reasons

I can't imagine anyone in their prime earning years moving to FL just for the weather.

I'm thinking QOL being the fact that you can take your NY money with you and live a little more comfortably. Plus, you'd be living in the tourism and theme park capital of the U.S. so you'd always have a fun filled action packed day!

I live in Mount Dora -- 30 minutes West of Orlando -- and enjoy the many amenities Florida has to offer me and my family. My wife and I (both under 30) have good jobs, our kids attend good schools, there are plenty of available extra-curricular activities/sports for all, including myself. My kids can play soccer (outdoors, leagues) year round, they can swim (again, outdoors) year-round, we play ice hockey, go biking on the multitude of nature trails...
Cars last longer than most places thanks to the lack of snow, quality of roads (no potholes to **** up the suspension), therefore, less money spent on vehicles.
Beaches an hour East and an hour West always make for good weekend outings -- year round.
No State Tax is a plus.
Downtown Orlando itself has boomed into a beautiful urban center with plenty to do and with gorgeous parks and modern architecture.
The economy in Florida has it that we are able to be financially successful in our respective fields of work and beyond.

And I guess the weather is nothing to complain about either.

The "quality of life" is what you make it out to be.
I chose to live in Orlando because it offers the best balance of everything I desire for me and my family. Is it perfect? HELL no! But nowhere is.
Charlotte, LA, Austin, Portland would not come close to providing us with the life we chose to live. Some prefer those locations, but me and 6,000,000 other Central Floridians (Orlando-Tampa) don't.
And no, I'm not originally from here -- at all. If I ever move from here, it won't be to another U.S. (or Canadian) city.

The reason I said 35-55 is that generally (although not exclusively) these are the years where parents are raising their kids.

Moving from the NE this often means that only one parent has to work. In suburban NYC usually both parents have to work to pay the bills. This adds pressure and it can get pretty intense. The cost of living is going up faster than salaries do, and the alternative for many is to do a 1-2 hour commute each way into Manhattan to earn more. This also negatively impacts QOL for many people as they aren't around for their kids as much during the week.

You also get far less for your money. Paying $600K+ for an older home on a small piece of property goes with the territory. This same home often needs frequent maintenance, which if you are a commuter, also has to be farmed out unless you want to spend all weekend on that.

For many it feels like being on a treadmill that you can't stop. Unless you leave.

I also agree with much that Arcenal352 says about QOL. People seem generally more friendly, the pace is a bit slower and this also contributes positively.
