When I moved down here from Chicago I pretty much figured I'd be done with Vienna hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches and thin cracker crust pizza cut in squares. But I do fine with the fresh shrimp, flounder and grouper. And grocery prices are much cheaper here and the quality of the meat and produce better. Florida is OK.

people who say florida beaches "are the greatest ever" have never been to central america or the caribbean, in fact beaches in Maine blow away the tar filled beaches in fl.

I have and have to say when you talk beauty..........Florida beaches win by far! We spend time surfing the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in several areas because we have friends that live there. The beaches in some are really dark brown/black/ rocky because of the volcanoes in the interior with lots of glass, tree branches and trash thrown in. The water was not sparkling/glassy or that impressive.....very dirty and warned by locals to not even get into the Pacific in some areas because of sewage levels in the water.
Just like here there were some pretty beaches with white sand and blue water like at Manuel Antonio National Park but we see far more that are no more impressive than the Atlantic and ours are much cleaner. Less people here walking up and down the beaches trying to sell drugs, trinkets, etc, too.

We love it down there, though and are excited that Southwest will start flying to San Juan in October.

Darn, I thought I had adding photos down, but obviously it did not work:-(

I din't upload a lot of the beach pics except for the sunsets, but this is the beach outside our gated/guarded condo we always rent in Jaco when we go to Manuel Antonio. It is one of the best beaches in town-pretty private for the most part, but the sand is really dark and dirty, rocky, lots of glass and debri from branches and trash.

In Tamarindo the beach is a little nicer but has a reef/rocks on a good share of it that goes out quite a ways exposed at low tide.

Favorite beach is Manuel Antonio and South. Have not seen the beaches in Panama yet.

Trying to remember the last time I saw tar on my feet or on the beach from the Atlantic beaches and have to say it has been probably 15 years ago and we are there all the time because that is where we walk for exercise. When is the last time you hit an Atlantic Beach Chase?

The best beach is the one you live by.

Yes!!!! This is a different climate, culture, and lifestyle. Please don't expect it to be just like where you came from. Embrace the differences. Eat some different foods.

I have lived in Venice since last October, and it's a little dismaying how so many people want to find exactly the same foods they eat when they are up north. I want to see Gulf seafood on the menu, not fish from the Great Lakes, clams from the East Coast, and (name your city) style pizza from wherever. It's like they all want New Jersey, only with warm weather and flip flops.
