Whether it is a mandatory evacuation or voluntary, would you leave?

Or stick it out?

Me, I am leaving = don't have to tell me twice IF it is mandatory. Have no desire to get stuck and cannot leave.

Hmmm, voluntarily - nope, looters!!!

If it's mandatory, and I see a REAL, SERIOUS threat, I'll leave. In addition to it being extremely dangerous (no power, flooded, no stores, can't buy food, can't drive anywhere) it's also a misdemeanor if for whatever reason you get caught staying and somehow impede emergency crews.

If it's voluntary, I'm staying.

I'll make my own risk/benefit calculation and suffer (or not) the consequences thereof. There are times it's of course rational to heed the recommendation of authorities, but it's rarely rational to blindly defer to the authorities purely for authority's sake.

In 2004 I was on a barrier island, we had a couple of storms that season. One of the storms knocked out the electricity for a couple of weeks. Being in a condo with no electricity, A/C, no cooking, no lighting, no TV, no internet is not fun. I tried to keep the sliding glass doors to the ocean open for cooler air, but the condo would fill with humidity and that caused the smoke alarms to go off. I tried staying there 1 night and gave up and went to a friends house on the mainland.

I stayed during mandatory evac during Irma, and I’m doing it again.

Not heeding mandatory evacuations isn't right bright, but we didn't earn the tag of Floriduh without some evidence. If living on a barrier island in the path of potential landfall of a Category 3 hurricane, it typically doesn't work out well with storm surge and flooding. Ask those still living who didn't evacuate after Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Sandy if they'd do it again..
