Yeah, California is DEFINITELY a state that Florida should emulate!
California pays WAYYYY better...

My wife is in school to be an RN and has already been recruited by a few hospitals, One in San Francisco (UCSF Medical Center) offered her a starting salary of $73k a year...

How much does an RN make fresh out of school in Florida ?

BTW, you can be a meter maid in PBC and make $13.00/hour. A METER MAID.
As I said before I know housekeepers from S. America who make over $60K. Some rich people can be very generous with their help. As grapico has said other industry just isn't here. And if it is the pay is practically an insult to your education and experience. I also have a friend in IT down here and he got offers from Mississippi and Alabama for $20K higher than Florida for the exact same job. I worked for a company that paid 25% less to its Florida employees than any other state including LA, TX, AR, MS, GA, etc. When people questioned it the company told them it's because it's Florida. Plain and simple. By the way these were good jobs requiring advanced degrees. Needless to say the company could not retain employees but they did not mind since they saved money in the long run.

I know a lot of smart and educated people and I'm sad to say not many are able to make a decent living in Florida. They are mostly drastically underpaid and taken advantage of. This has always been the Florida way.

Yes CA has some serious problems right now but it always bounces back. Being the 7th largest economy in the world it has all the industry and jobs it needs. Even now there are still many more jobs and much higher pay than Florida can dream of. The cost of living and prices would not be so high otherwise. On the other hand Florida is just waiting for construction and tourism to return with no Plan B. Nothing new on the horizon. It's a shame.

By the way, the meter maid gig is part time with no benefits from what I've seen in the paper. Where is the advancement and future in that? Too many people in Florida think of the short term only and just settle for it. What happens tomorrow? You need to learn and grow for the future.

Oh, I totally agree with you. Sure, Florida enjoys no state tax, but the cost of living here in relation to the average salary is probably higher than California, taxes and all.

I was in Massachusetts a few days ago, which is renowned for its taxes, yet 1) salaries are (on average) higher and 2) many things are actually cheaper, such as groceries and gas.

At the end of the day, it's all relative. I just don't agree with people when they say that living in Florida is some sort of "bargain", because it certainly is not.

The thing we all need to remember is that no matter where you are we are all going throught LIFE -- kids to raise, jobs to go to, nice/mean people to deal with, the everyday struggles that we all deal with -- maybe even worse in today's economy.

But it does make it a bit easier that the weather is great (I know, I know the heat! But have you commuted onthe subway in NYC in August? Have you been in Nj or NY in July/August -- it gets hot there too!)

And there are really tons of things to do here -- often much cheaper than in NYC etc. You can go see Jersey Boys on Broadway for $150 or catch the tour here for $50. Lots of regional theatres, all the big name concerts, spring training -- see you favorite team for half the price of regular season tickets -- free beaches!! Great for someone from NJ where evey town charges PER PERSON to go to the beach!! So its not as bad as some would make it seem....

Been here almost 3 years and I guess now I would say that I wouldn't go back north - it does take a while to acclimate! Overall I'd say a much better way of life!

Yes I've lived in NJ and agree it does get hot however there are days that get cool. In Florida its a constant heat with endless humidity which makes it so unbearable. The funny thing is now when I do go back during the summer the nights are actually chilly to me.

You have to have a resident sticker to park near the beach in Naples. If not, at a metered lot, or very, very far away.

There is also one where there is a guard. No sticker, no parking at all.

But then this is Naples.

Thanks for the info.. but honestly, those are low wages for 2009. I intentionally showed a 2005 wage to compare with the 2006 salaries you posted.

BTW, if those 2006 salaries were median, that would be even worse unless they were figuring in the part time. It would them mean that half of the CRNAs earned less than the listed salary.
