We did and have never imagined we could be so happy!!!! We are technically in a town called Bone Cave that is so small it doesn't even appear on city-data. The closest thing we can find on here is Rock Island, a little town on the other side of Hwy70S.

We are just down the mountain from Fall Creek Falls. We moved from Naples, where I grew up (5th generation no less!!) and were floored at how cheap everything here is. Our real estate taxes? $300/year. Homeowners insurance? $800 a year. Electric $170. Phone / cable / high speed internet combined $160. Water is high - $100, we were on a well in Florida. Auto insurance $600/year for 2 new vehicles.

So what's it like where we live? Well, we bought a 2550+ square foot 2 story brick home with 5 bedrooms, 2 baths, and 7.25 acres. There's no such thing as an impact fee. You build what you want, when you want, where you want on your land. We have the most amazing mountain view from our front door. I'll try to attach a picture of it.

The neighbors are amazing. Within the first week nearly every neighbor had stopped to say hi and welcome us to the area. They have been of immense help to us from calling a friend that had a chain saw that would clear our land to finding a plumber. You name it.

The schools are incredible. Class sizes are 10 - 12 kids per class. They don't have the gazillions of dollars like Florida did, but they way more than make up for it. The teachers teach because they want to teach. And it shows. They take turns volunteering their time after school to tudor the kids for free.

We've been here since May and have seen prices really going up quick. There are some new developments that are charging a fortune. If you are looking for a gated community style neighborhood you won't get the deal we did. But if you are looking for a nice country home in a rural area with good hard working down to earth God fearing people, pack your bags and get up here now!! Trust me - you wont' regret it!!

The attachment isn't working for some reason, but if you PM or e-mail me I'll send it to you!!

You know what, I bet many of us who are saddened by the condition of Florida are saddened because we remember many parts of it being like mrs1885 describes her new (for her) town in TN. I guess I am a bit jealous of mrs1885 (who got out) and of all the people who have now made Florida their home. They haven't made it better or worse, they have just made it different. People I would want to live next to, probably like mrs1885, have left to make way for people who lack the same appreciation for what I value. Those people are no better or worse than I am, but it does make me want to move on too. If I wasn't so greedy and wanting a job making the money I do, I would take off tomorrow. But I am young, so maybe I will buy the land now next to mrs185 and just hold onto it for 25 years until I am ready to retire.

What did you pay if I can ask? How did you happen to go there.

Now I am really depressed. I spent 1 hour 10 minutes today just going on a two mile trip to the bank and when I got home had to lay down I was so stressed. I hate Fort Lauderdale, I have to get out of here soon.

Macguy, I've always appreciated your honesty. And no, it's not just because it's a "negative" comment, but because I perceive you to be objective in what mostly unwinds as a subjective debate.

I think as long as the US continues on it's current trajectory, the nation will be one of nomads booming and busting unpopulated areas. And now that technology allows many to telecommute, the problem may compound faster than any left-wing new-urbanist ever imagined. Plus, has there ever been a nation as capable as ours of becoming detached from any geographic area? Weather, crops, social patterns... there is no longer any logical reason to choose any locale over another other than price/perception.

To the original topic, mrs1885, that part of TN is beautiful. I spent a weekend at Fall Creek Falls. It is truly an exceptional park, especially for anyone who can appreciate its uniqueness. Most of TN is pleasant in that way.

It really becomes a question of whether or not you can sustain yourself there. For retirees, it may be a great solution to the Florida cost crisis.

Exclamation moving away..... away.......

Mrs1885 with all due respect, I hear your point loud and clear, it's called
living dirt cheap in the land of isolation (except perhaps, for the ocassional
visit by a serial killer), I can mention a million different places that sound just like yours in our vast USA, however I beleive that the resources should be preserved, instead of having 10 acre homes all over the country for useless purpouses. If all people think like you, what would be of the great cities of the world?? such as the Rome, Paris, Madrid, Miami etc.

Wow, I'm impressed. Insightful observations here. Nicely done Muggy!

Not sure what roads you're taking, it takes me half an hour tops to make it home from work and thats a 10 mile trip - no highway - during rush hour.

My home has been here for nearly 60 years - I didn't change anything here! It's still as gorgeous as it was 100 years ago. Since when are all serial killers from small towns by the way??!! Hysterical!! You just kill me - no pun intended!! Have you been to Miami?? Ummm..yuck in many areas. Don't get me wrong - parts of Miami are quite nice, but most of it is way overpopulated for my taste, but that's just me. Some people like big cities - I happen to live large open spaces. I'd never want to live like that. I love the natural beauty of where I live now, as opposed to the area I used to live in that was being raped and paved over in at a heart stopping pace!

Default you've got it!

Finally, I can understand why we are so violent and irrational, we are a nation of barbaric nomads!!!, no wonder we have the highest rates of crime
drug abuse, pedophiles(ask right wing extremist rep Foley), psychiatric problems, serial killers, homicides and suicide in the world.
Social structure?, who cares....
