I've heard from many people that if you're a resident of Florida for a certain amount of time you would be able to go to college for free there. I was just wondering if this is true. Thank you for your help.

No.

If you go to high school in Florida and do well on college admissions test, you can qualify for the Bright Futures scholarship, which currently covers most tuition costs. However, Bright Futures is not financially sustainable and in order to keep both program and Florida higher education somewhat functional, you now will pay a fairly large sum for 'college fees' at most schools in addition to the tuition money that Bright Futures covers.

LOL!! That's the funniest thing I have ever read. Sorry, I'm not sure where you heard that, but no...that isn't true. Not in Florida. Florida has (had) a Bright Futures Program which did pay if you met the criteria. There are two levels of criteria to meet in order to receive it. It didn't pay for fees, housing, books, etc. It pays for credit hours. It has been revamped to cover only the essential core courses now, not all the credit hours.

Hope that helps. Sorry, but I'm glad to see you are checking it out. Also, I'm glad you are wanting to better yourself. Good luck to you - seriously, good luck I hope you get find a great college education. Everyone deserves one.

Not free in Florida but I was hoping my engineer son would check out the Coast Guard Academy. You can get a free education there-even an engineering degree. You are at the school for 9 months and then assigned to a boat for 3. Then back in school, etc. It sounded like a great way for us to have 2 kids in college at the same time, but ended up with both using the Bright futures which helped.

Note that the Coast Guard Academy has an 8% acceptance rate, so best to have a back up plan if you're applying there. And you though it was hard to get into U of F.
