When I was a boy in the '50's I ate a lot of squirrel since that was easy to hunt table food. Don't hear much about squirrel hunting anymore until lately.
Squirrel can be hunted with a .22 firearm or a .22 , or .177, airgun as a cheap easy to kill meat source.
I never had it but my Husband did when he was kid.His father caught one and they ate it. Now I don't think on LI many people eat squirrel, maybe it's a western/southern delicacy? I would not let that touch my lips.

Then don't eat and beef, chicken, or pork by products such as lunch meat, processed or canned meats since fresh killed squirrel is much much cleaner.
I have relatives who have talked about this, they said when times were tough and they needed meat, they went squirrel hunting. The only way I will eat this, is if I'm lied too and told it's another meat. Its a "mental" thing, I can't voluntarily eat animals that crawl around my deck and that we feed.
I've never eaten it, or seen it eaten by anyone else. Never actually heard anyone I know speak of eating it. If I was starving, it would be one thing, but to do so voluntarily, when I can afford to buy something else, I just couldn't do it.
Even now, in my head, all I can hear is the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies....
I almost ate squirrel--once....when I was a kid, we were at my aunt and uncle's house. My aunt was frying some squirrel (don't remember how/where they got it), but she got distracted and it burnt in the skillet. The smell of burnt squirrel was so bad, we went outside for fresh air even though it was winter with snow on the ground...
There is nothing wrong with those things, actually many states classify them as small game and have seasons and bag limits for them. I prefer rabbit, but years ago shot a few squirrels, made them in the oven with potatoes, onions, sun dried tomatoes, herbs and some white wine....they were excellent. Very lean, almost tasted like lamb.
They are clean animals, and are safe to eat. If you see how some animals are treated in mass production farms, in terms of sanitary conditions, etc, you wouldn't be too happy.

Well at least you would know what the squirrel was fed, unlike what the beef, pork, chicken you buy in the grocery store.
