I'm single and I buy milk by the CASE! 24 at a time!
Ok, ok,... so it's the cans of evaporated milk, but I still buy a case at a time. I use it for everything - baking, cooking, coffee, tea, etc., I used to be in love with Carnation Evaporated Milk but, now, I found a brand for only $.65 a can and it tastes BETTER than Carnation! (At HALF the price!)
Today's milk doesn't agree with me. Not because of the lactose, I'm fine with that. Because I tend to eat pretty healthy and make everything from scratch, my body is no longer used to chemicals, additives, preservatives, etc., in boxed and canned foods. It's even in milk. I cooked myself into a healthy, from-scratch corner and now I have to stick with it. Oh darn.
A lot and when we have his family (4 brothers and their families) for Holiday Gatherings you can quadruple that amount. They all love milk and I don't mind a bit, it is just good to be able to spend some quality family time.
I drink about 3 gallons a week. If I had to buy anything smaller than a gallon, I would go crazy with trying to fit it into the fridge, not to mention the expense.
I usually buy milk by the half gallon and fortunately I have a way to do it cost-effectively.
Kroger runs in-store coupons every other week on half gallons, and with the coupon, the unit price per ounce works out to 10-20 percent cheaper than their gallon milk. With their in-store coupons, the cashiers almost always have coupons at the register and you can just ask them to ring up a coupon for such-and-such item (so that at the end of the week when the store is out of coupons, you can still get the coupon price).
I usually buy a half gallon at the beginning of the week (Sunday-Monday) and then another at the end of the week (Friday-Saturday) and since they're fresh for (usually) up to two weeks, I don't have to buy any the following week when they don't have a coupon.
With as many kids as we have, we buy milk by the cow.
