We are going to save the shrimp and grits for another event. The fried okra is a great idea! Gumbo is New Orleans which isn't our southern. We are Low Country/Soul Food.

We are Low Country Southerners. We cook oysters for EVERYTHING. These will be soaked in buttermilk and hot sauce then battered and deep fried.

If you do mac and cheese, do not make it from a box!
That is a joke about the mac and cheese right? I've never even tasted box macaroni and cheese.

I have my great grandmother's tomato pie recipe.

Yeah, I forgot to add the winking smiley!

If you can get good tomatoes where you are in Florida, just slice some and serve with a little salt and pepper. I am badly missing fresh tomatoes right now!

Oysters? EW.
With a few tweaks...I would do the chicken fried steaks with milk gravy, collard greens and biscuits. Southern red velvet cake with boiled frosting for dessert.

Was going to suggest cornbread as a minimum but I live in Texas. Its a different South.

Cornbread of sorts is plenty Southern...just don't add sugar to it. I grew up with baked cornbread in the South...unleavened (and definitely NOT sweet).

It's funny, if you live in the South, you realize how different southern cuisine is in the South. Most people don't realize that New Orleans isn't really southern but Cajun and Creole. Texas is a whole other plate of good stuff.

I have one black skillet I use for cornbread only and every time I fry bacon that is where I dump the grease. Our cornbread is sweet, isn't Texas cornbread savory?
