The OP didn't mention cheese fries. Ugh. They used to sell those at the Vet. Not sure if they do in Citizens.
Maybe stromboli was created near Philly, maybe Spokane, but I grew up with 'em in Connecticut and NY, so I don't associate it with any specific city. Nor do I associate pierogi with Chicago.
A roast pork sandwich is always a winner (but doesn't beat a Cubano in Tampa or Miami).
Pizza... I'm originally from the Northeast. I want to give that title to Philly, but honestly, I've had some excellent pizza (non-deep dish) in Chicago. The Philly pizzas I've had would be on the lower end of NYC/Hoboken scale.
A Chicago dog beats all other dogs period. And if you desperately needed to find a dog that was better than a Chicago dog, you'd go to Hot Doug's, which happens to be in Chicago.
A warm Philly soft pretzel is the pinnacle of pretzelness.
Um, scrapple... it's not bad. It's also not something I'd go out of my way for.

I think if I were forced to live on only the types of foods each city is known for, I'd go with Chicago in a heartbeat. And that the Mexican and Asian street food is outstanding only make Chicago all the better.

Oh, and before I forget... Intelligentsia, Dark Matter, Metropolis >>>> LaColombe.
I'd opt for a North Newark NJ double Italian hot dog

Newark, NJ has some of the best Portuguese restaurants this side of the Atlantic. Ironbound, baby!

Cheesesteaks are gross and deep dish pizza is to die for. Winner: Chicago.

Philly offers vegetarian cheesesteaks for those who don't like meat.

Well, for something that is gross, it sure has a world wide following. You can get Philly Cheesesteaks in London to Bangkok now.

Chicago style pizza ... not bad, but it's really some kind of cheesy tomato quiche ... give me thin crust New York style pizza any day!!!

That vege cheese steak does look good.
Btw: Chicago has several hot dog stands (at one time there was one in every neighborhood) and
Hot Dougs is closing.
Lot's of Polish in Chicago (just as many Poles as in Warsaw) - so there are several places that
many people go to for those pierogies.
Chicago always had both deep dish and thin crust pizzas.
I'm not voting one over the other since I've been to Philly and I'm from Chicago....so both have goodies
to offer. Can't comment on molecular cuisine -not interested.

Thanks, Bailey. Sounds like you can get a good dog in Chicago after all....and I'd love the 'Polish'!
I just cringe at the classic 'Chicago dog'....which is topped with everything I don't want on my dog. lol....

Chicago food is on my bucket list.
Anyone who sells cheesesteaks with 'whiz' on them needs to be taught different. And then, I've seen those vendors in those Philly places refusing to serve people, based on how they order their sub or what they want on it. Morons.

So does jihad. Your point?

As for floppy, greasy New York style pizza -- keep it.
