Some people always have to eat with fine dinnerware with pleasant surroundings, and they don't shop in big supermarket. Others only care about the practical side of eating. Just for a discussion . modcut

I'm particular about WHAT I am eating since I tend to be fairly selective about the type of food and how it is cooked. If I am cooking for company then I will put out the glassware rather than the paper plates. I might even do a nice centerpiece with candles to satisfy my creative side. I don't even own expensive silverware/dining sets--seems kind of pretentious and I would rather let the food be the bragging piece.

I'm a very practical person, so my dinnerware is plain, but if I had fancy china, you'd better believe I'd use it. Why have it if not to use it? As for having a pretty table, I often have some sort of centerpiece and dinner candles, although they're rather simple. Think votives and a grocery store bouquet cut down and displayed in Ball canning jars. As my kids prepare to fly the coop, I'm trying to make every dinner count, so it's worth the effort for me to make the meals delicious, the dining table inviting, and the conversation pleasant.

I use Fiestaware and bistro flatware to match (two shades of turquoise). It's important to me to serve food on plates I like, but it's nothing schmancy, or "exquisite." I'm kind of anti-schmancy, even, though I've never eaten on paper plates (indoors) at home in my life, as a child or an adult.
I like nice dinnerware and we use our Polish Pottery every day. We also have nice flatware and drinking glasses. No paper or plastic in my home--ever. Just my preference. I make it a point to cook really nice meals every day and I want to really enjoy everything about it and that includes the way my table looks, including French linens (table cloth, place mats, napkins). I am definitely not a fancy person, but I think eating with my family, friends, or just by myself deserves special treatment every day.
Depends. I have all manner of dishes & china. Sets handed down, some purchased at estate & yard sales. From fine china all the way down to Corelle. I have a set of older Lenox Victorian Village porcelain dishes that also has flatware with matching porcelain handles. Old goblets, and sets or tumblers & stems.... "Dishes" are my thing. So, everyday we eat from something or other of my "dishes." I will break out the paper plates & plastic, etc., for crowds, but even then, thought & planning goes into it. I try, personally never to drink from plastic or styrofoam. Don't like how it "feels." (yes, I know...I am weird) My tabletop is almost as important to me as the food. Tables linens & centerpieces are somewhat important. Tonight...it is soup from an old porcelain mug. Sandwich on an old ruby red plate & ginger ale from Waterford highball. See? Told you I was weird! Since I am OCD about all of this - when we go out, I prefer "dishes." So hard to do.

We also use Fiestaware, we have one of every color, and just simple stainless.
Most of the time we eat on the couch in the family room. The fine china and rel silver stays in a glass front cabinet in the dining room where we may use it 1-2 times a year for holiday dinners. Much of our food purchases come from Costco, with some fill-in smaller quantity items from either Trader Joe's or a local supermarket.
Not I! Everyday dining is with paper plates as we don't like to do dishes. But we do have heavy stainless steel silverware. I don't like flimsy or "tangy" tasting silverware.
When guests come we have heavy plain white plates we use. I prefer to concentrate on the flavor of foods than what's serving it. Maybe it stems from growing up with fancy dinner and glass ware only to have the food itself disappoint. I am all about the food taste.
I thought this thread was going to be about people who insist on eating at only Michelin rated restaurants.
