This ridiculous, ignorant comment seems to come up every time tipping is debated. What kind of people believe this is the norm?

I do if there's a tip jar. I do it at 3 places, Chinese takeout, the burrito place, and the ice cream shop. I usually tip $1 or less. It's not mandatory but I work in a place where tips are appreciated but not necessary so I know what it means to receive a tip.

The waiter who is putting your order together could be waiting on a table and making 15%, but instead is taking time from her/his table(s) to fulfill mine. Although less work, they still have to put in the order, get the napkins, plastic cutlery, packages of dressing, sour cream, butter, etc., .
And so I do always leave a small gesture of my appreciation.

...and the tip is left to the waiter who placed the order via computer. They are held accountable to that by the IRS, meaning they have to claim the dollar amount of your order at the end of the night, and declare a certain amount of tip to cover their lower than minimum wage salary for that check. If you don't tip them something, they still have to claim it (your check total) and be taxed on it.

If you don't tip them on that, they have to cover the deficit .
Thank you and people like us appreciate people like you!!!!

Do those people who tip for takeout also tip at fast food restaurants, for example McDonald's?

Fast-food workers make over minimum wage and don't rely on tips.

Dine-in restaurant servers in many states make only $2.13 an hour. So they rely totally on tips. In these kinds of places, to-go is not that common, so it is assigned to a server. Making $2.13 an hour.

You have to assess what kind of establishment you are going to.
This is exactly it, and what some of us have been saying. I evaluate a situation before I decide.

If a waitress making $2.15 an hour is pulled off of the floor to pack my full dinner to go, she's getting a tip. I doesn't have to be huge, just something.

My son was the ice cream guy at Friendly's for a while when he was in high school. He made all of the sundaes, scooped cones, and packed pints. When they were short of help, he also bussed tables and helped clean up major kitchen disasters. He was so thankful for the small tips he received every once in a while.

So then I take it you are consistent enough to not participate in a broken economic model? Or do you game the system by participating in the exploitation of workers by their employers?

I tip 25¢ for take-out and 50¢ when I'm dining in the restaurant.

I don't, typically. I also do takeout, on average, probably less than once a year.

I eat lunch at my desk, so on days when I'm too lazy to pack a lunch or simply didn't have time or anything ready, I do takeout. Happens about once a week on average.
