I've got the real answer... the craze is tied to the increase in air fryer ownership. Tater tots are tailor-made to cook in an air fryer. Cooking them that way is so much faster than preheating an oven to 400+ degrees.
I've got another real answer...the Duggars. On "19 Kids and Counting," the Duggar family's favorite entree was Tater Tot Casserole. They even share the recipe on their website. The popularity of that show might also have spawned a Tater Tot craze.
OMG, a local restaurant makes their own tater tots and they are to die for. People come from miles around for them. I could eat them daily. The Ore-Ida frozen things, not so much.
I've been hearing them called tater turds recently.
I've never liked the ones I got frozen from the store, but everything else is better at a fast food place than I can cook, so maybe I'll try some the next time I see 'em on the menu.
I did a breakfast casserole with tator tots, I did everything short of grab the whole thing, crouch in the corner and growl at the rest of the household.
Yesterday I had some with catchup
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm (Only 1/2 a bag left but I enjoyed em)
The other night I was ordering a burger & the side choice was fries or tater tots. aghhhh who the heck wants tater tots for dinner. I don't really like them any time of day.
Our new bar and grill at our country club has an appetizer called covered tots. They are tots with all kinds of toppings, green onions, sour cream, melted cheese, etc. They are great but I thought like you, what is with what appears to be a sudden surge of places serving them? I realize they are not new by any means, just seems like you see a lot more of them lately.

LOL, Tater to casserole waaaaaaaay precedes reality TV.
That was a Lutheran church potluck staple growing up in the Midwest from way back. Minimal prep and makes a lot...key for feeding a big group fast.
