In Maryland, you can get crab cakes all over the place. But I'm wondering how popular this food is in other areas.
For those of you especially outside the mid-Atlantic region, have you had crab cakes? Do you know what they are?
They're very popular here in NJ, but then again, we are mid-Atlantic and just a short hop up the coast from you.
But again, I spent a lot of time in Ontario, which has no ocean, and at the farmer's market in the rural lake country where I go, there's a guy who sells homemade crab cakes, good ones, and if you don't get there early enough, he is sold out.

That is an "apples to oranges" comparison.
The EXPECTATION of what a crab cake is in the Delmarva area is 100% backfin crab meat with just enough bread crumbs to hold it together. Outside of that area, most crab cakes are made with ANY crab meat (backfin, scraps, claw meat) and usually are 40-50% crab meat.
Bran cakes are pretty popular everywhere. Customer expectations are NOT.
I'm guessing on a scale of 1 to 10, quite possibly a 6, maybe higher. We're not far from Maryland. Some of the commuters to DC, myself, as well, used to live in Maryland. I've always liked crab. I can't remember when I first had crabcakes. I'll try to get them whenever possible. Most grocery stores in this area sell crab cakes
There are a few restaurants in my town (Midwest) that will serve crab cakes seasonally. I think the local Kroger often has them in the butcher case. I never buy or order them. I like one or two bites of crab cakes even when visiting a coastal area.
I rarely order seafood at restaurants UNLESS I'm in a coastal area. There are a few types of fish that are available from Lake Michigan which I'll order in season.
If you're much more than a hour away from being able to spit directly into the Chesapeake Bay or one of its immediate tributaries (I don't mean the Susquehanna River in Cooperstown, NY), don't bother with crab cakes. You might get lucky and get one that's edible, but the chances are slim.
Up here in Massachusetts they are pretty popular I guess. I see them on pretty much every seafood restaurant menu. I see them at other types of restaurants too. Some of them are actually pretty good, almost as good as I have had in Maryland!
Occasionally I will eat a clam cake. Those are pretty good too!
