It really would depend on what type of bug and if it was dead or alive.

We were visiting our son and went out for breakfast to a place that had good reviews. It was one of those places that you order at the counter and they bring the food out. I grabbed a glass of water from the fountain dispenser. I noticed a few gnats or fruit flies in the water. I dumped it and went for another water. Same thing. Did it all again--same result. It was like they were coming out of the dispenser. I finally just went to the counter and ordered an overpriced water. We won't return next time we're in the area.

Sure enough, there was a couple of screw worms in the swordfish the kitchen had missed, and I guess they were still moving around.
It can happen. To any fish. Don't eat fish (or pork, or smoked sausages, or medium rare steak, or sushi, or raw oysters) if you're a squeamish person.

I used to find worms in apples and cherries.

If you find a bug in a salad that you prepared, would you ever eat at home again??

Not me. And, I'd sell the house.

in certain countries I find it wise to not order dishes than look like worms. (a 'stir-fry' noodle dish in central China was found to be 'moving' (maggots)) The group I was with 're-ordered', I was no longer hungry, as I had eaten plenty of the "stir-fry".

As previous fruit farmer... advice for cherries? ... Never eat 1/2 a cherry ! All or nothing.

How do people really know how they would react? It's a hypothetical question.

I actually worked with a woman who regularly did the Victor/Victoria thing with her husband. About every 7-10 days, they would order appetizers, salads, eat most of their entrees before they dumped a dead bug into the last bit of food. Sometimes they kept the bug until desert. She came to work giggling about the free meals.

Same couple made a large stain on their carpet then purposefully left their house with the water running so their homeowners insurance would pay for new carpet.

Kicker of the story? The husband wanted to be a cop.

Restaurants and insurers are getting a lot smarter about that these days. With the advent of cameras in public places, a lot of the scammers have been caught. The problem with the scammers is that they are so stupid that they will try to play the same scam at the same restaurant.

My favorite one was the guy who sent letters to 50 restaurants in St. Louis explaining that he had been in the restaurant and a waiter/waitress spilled something on him he was requesting amounts like $12-15 which was the cost of dry cleaning his shirt or suit. Most of the places actually sent him a check or a gift certificate just as a goodwill measure.

However, the idiot started bragging to friends and they all started to do something similar and within weeks, everyone knew that it was all a scam.
