I always try to support local businesses instead of chains. Papa John's politics tick me off so we swore them off last year. We rarely go out for pizza as that is a good choice for delivery at the last minute when I just don't feel like cooking and some local pizza places don't deliver. So we don't get as much pizza as I would like.
There aren't locally owned pizza joints close to where I live. Whenever I get pizza at "the chains", I always like to get it at Round Table Pizza. Little Caesars sucks so does Dominoes. Until I'm able to go out further into the city I live in, I will happily continue to get pizza at Round Table.
Here in Minneapolis, the national chains can't hold a cow chip to the locally owned and the mom-n-pop places. Punch and Dulano's are my favorite. Two completely different types of pizza.
Mostly, though, I like buying (or making) garlic naan bread and making individual pizzas with those. Just add pizza sauce and regular toppings. I also like getting adventurous and using a curry sauce and adding Indian style toppings. You can make any ethnic flavors you want without having to commit to an entire, whole pizza. Much cheaper than delivery.
Here in Brooklyn, we take pizza seriously and there are no shortage of local mom and pop pizza places. Therefore, it's not hard to find a good pizza place that will always beat out the chains.
That said, the only times I will order from Dominos or Papa Johns is when it's late (after 10pm) and the other places have closed. Or if I'm just jonesing for their chicken strips.
I have traveled to places though where the chains were the best option, sadly. Once I had the misfortune of having pizza at Cici's in FL and I thought I was going to gag.
