I'm not sure of the exact year, but at some point around that time one of the major fast food chains decided to swith their delicious french fries for something totally different. They had a big television campaign showing viewers selecting the new fries in a "taste test" comparison.
The new fries were (still are) horrible. They are more like a hybrid between fries and potato chips or something. But I love potato chips. I can't really describe them.
The chain has been slowly dropping it's stores like flies since then, despite the so-called happy customers in the TV commercials.
The problem is that several other chains followed suit in the mid-90's and switched their fries to the same type. They must have been cheaper or something.
Does anyone else miss the good old-style fries that you used to get at these places?
I get the feeling we can't name companies here, but the original burger place in question has a royal title. Another that followed suit is popular in the south and small towns and is known for their desserts (and has moved more into this market since making the french fry switch). Another is a popular drive-in style, also know for it's desserts and beverage options. Another is a typical fast-food place known for having the first intercom ordering system (like all places have today). Another is a fast food seafood place (a real shame since french fries were a big part of fried seafood).
Rant over.
