I've known people who were "allergic" to it, except when they didn't know that the food they were eating, and asking for seconds and thirds, contained it, and then they had no reactions to it at all. (I served them food containing it without knowing about their "allergy"; the subject only came up later in unrelated conversation.) There is a certain "bandwagon" effect to MSG, though there are certainly people who do have legitimate issues with it, though far fewer than think they do.
This is a relatively clearly-written article that lays out a rough history of how MSG came to have its reputation in spite of all studies to the contrary. Of particular interest is the 1998 double blind, placebo controlled, multiple challenge study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
This is me too. I don't give it much thought. I don't eat out a lot and I avoid processed foods so I do feel that I don't consume mass quantities of it. I assume though if I am at a restaurant I'm sure I'm digesting it. Never had a problem. I just won't willingly add it to my own cooking.
Haha...I used to say the same thing about my mom, but the older I get, the more sensitive I am to different foods, so I'm less likely to dismiss my mom's "allergies" as the rambling of a drama queen than I was before.
That is often the case with most people and I used to be one of them. Still lots of people who don't know better like to dismissively wave the "anecdotal" flag or claim that everyone who says they're affected is faking it until it affects them or someone close to them. Not sure why they feel the need to interject criticism into others' discussion of potentially serious health concerns. For instance, some affected by MSG have a rapid heartbeat, which can be dangerous for anyone with a heart condition.
Burger King uses it but McDonald's doesn't or uses less of it. Many Chinese restaurants use it but Panda doesn't or uses less of it.
Do you mean Panda Express?
Pei Wei says they don't add MSG.
