I'm always thinking about just getting away from South Florida. Going on my 6th year here. I like certain aspects of it, but theres also things I don't like at all about living here. Anybody move away and was happy about it? Anybody move away and regret it?

i moved away almost 5 years ago and i wished i would have done it sooner! i am now living on the pennsylvania mason dixon state line in the mountains in college. i love it here!
i found florida to be too boring for me although i am from florida.
i will be moving to the west coast in about 5 months and am super excited about that move.
yes, i know what you mean, should i stay or should i go now??? lol. go...
good luck.

p.s. florida used to be nice years ago but when the economy took a crap, in 2008, it was not worth it to stay there any longer. businesses were shutting down, neighborhoods were being foreclosed and turning into crack houses.

I lived in Broward and Dade (mostly Broward) for 20 years and then moved to Hillsborough County in the Tampa Bay area in 2000. I've never looked back, and although I sometimes miss Broward the way it was in the 1980s, I know it wouldn't be right for me now. I'm happy over here and it's a good place to be when you "age out" of South Florida.

I lived (and still live now) in Miami-Dade (it's still SoFL though) and live part-time in Rio de Janeiro and will soon try to move there completely full-time. The economy is way too bad, cost of living is far from great, traffic is horrid for a Metropolitan region that's not even that large; plus over there basically everything is going (and will continue to be going) uphill fast while here is mostly the opposite.

Although it has its pros the area, and it's pleasant and fine overall, good quality of life overall; basically, it's a city of contrasts. If you live in Key Biscayne, Pinecrest (lived there), Weston, Parkland or something, your experience will be one, while if you live in Oakland Park, Hollywood, Hialeah or Miami Gardens, it's another (nearly) completely different thing (much worse, in this example).

Well South FL is the 5th largest metro area in the country now in population. But I do understand your point of view. There are things they could do to reduce traffic.

It's all about money and how much you make.

Struggling folks or middle class working people will hate it.

Wealthy Americans will like it.

So Florida is a region dominated by poor immigrants and super wealthy immigrants.

The middle class is minimal.

Wealthy immigrants love Miami because it's basically a large Tropical Bogota with way less problems. Compared to Bogota, Rio, or any major city in Latin America, Miami is safe with minimal corruption. Well off immigrants can drive their Ferrari around and show off without being kidnapped. However, for the typical US citizen accustomed to life in Kentucky, Montana or Kansas, Miami is a step down.

At least in Rio's case, not only the homicide and crime rates have been going down nearly every single month for the last few years, but if it continues to do so (and it will most probably), it will be technically safer than here soon. The number of police officers hired every year is enormous and a few of the notorious favelas are being so urbanized that they have all the same services of the city (High-Speed Internet, Cable/Satellite TV, proper garbage collection, etc. etc.).

Also I worked for City (of Miami), and I can say that the corruption levels are not minimal (not even low - not that much though, better than a few years ago). But to be fair it's even (way) worse in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, etc.

And I agree that the wealth gap in SoFL is quite significant - pretty shoddy.

Wow, I didn't know it was the 5th one. Gotta make some more fact finding. And I agree that they should come up with better solutions for traffic, especially in Dade.

Left it 15 years, 7 months and 2 days ago but, who is counting? No regrets. Lived ther 8 .5 years and tried to get out for 4 of those years. It's....exhausting for business and outside sales people. Worked the are for the last 15 years on and off and was always happy to get back to gate D4.

It's okay to visit, even for an extended stay. Permanently? Never.
