The latest census population estimates released Tuesday show that no Florida city with more than 100,000 people ranked in the country's top 75 for growth last year. It represents a stunning reversal in the state's recent demographic history and signals the challenges Florida faces trying to rebuild a growth-based economy when growth is largely absent.

The estimates seem to capture the impact of the Great Recession, with Florida cities that were once among the big risers seeing only modest gains or, in some cases, unthinkable losses.

Economists point to the housing crisis and job losses as the main reason growth has slowed in Florida.
The state has always appealed to three groups:

retirees
who came in search of fair weather;
people in their 20s, 30s and 40s looking for jobs;
and immigrants from Mexico and other nations.

Retirees have slowed their migration
because, in many cases, they are having trouble selling their homes and finding money to relocate.
Job seekers see fewer opportunities in a state that has lost 800,000 jobs over the past two years.

"The big story is that, in the early part of this decade, we were near record levels," Smith said. "But what we're seeing now is the most dramatic decline since World War II. ------And it's because of the economic collapse-------.

"People are just not coming to Florida like they used to." "

In Lee, only Cape Coral saw an increase - 1.1 percent - bumping its population to 164,673, according to the Florida numbers.

I have seen yoko put out at least 5 different sets of population figures for cape coral that range from 100,000 to 170,000 always with "historic population decline"

this was one of the sources that she quoted last year. well now they are saying there was an increase.

As far as populations go they are always estimates, i believe the census is the best estimator but they don't do them every year. If you look at the census trend lines of what it has been what it is now and what it will be ten years from now it should show a steady incline with a sharp jump during the boom years a slight plateau for 3 years then a steady increase.

I at least hope that this source that yoko has quoted in the past will be enough to stop her from using as an alramist but I doubt it.

Angry Truth be known

This will be the last time I respond to this shills postings. One can twist and misquote facts and figures to suit our needs.

Living here and seeing for myself, most of what Yoko posts is heavily negative and opinionated.

That said, I will now turn on the SHUN filter.

I think we would all be better off if we did that, Unfortunately whenever I promise myself to do it there is another lie that will misinform someone that doesn't know any different ...... but here goes another try . Shun filter on.

re funding the adwords....someone could redirect some of their charitable giving or you could find a sponsor who is a Cape Coral business and give them promotional credit...especially if there is a business leader who has come forward on restraint

not stepping up myself...not my town

one thing we could try....every time someone becomes obsessively imbalanced in their postings, we all flood the moderator with complaints...that red triangle button in the top right corner, until he does something about it
