With an electric dryer, I have done this, here in the West in winter the air is quite dry, you may want to run the blower on your furnace/heat pump/whatever if you have central heat so as to mix the dryer exhaust with the rest of the air in the house.

You can just get one of those wooden drying racks and let your clothes air-dry (maybe overnight) if you are not in a big hurry.

Many early dryers were set up to vent back into the room (40's and 50's)

Frank is right as usual - this is for electric dryers only, do NOT try it with a gas dryer, for the reasons he states.

We have a gas furnace and an electric dryer. The air in the house during the winter is really dry. Adding the moist air makes the house more comfortable.

OTOH, doing that in the humid summer - especially that we don't run teh air conditioning is more uncomfortable.

Some of us don't even own a dryer: when the weather is nice out I hang the clothes outside to dry; when the weather isn't nice I hang the clothes inside to dry.

Depending on family size, it can be necessary to do laundry every day. Trying to avoid frequent laundering by not changing clothes or reusing towels can become a hygiene issue which in turn becomes more expensive than laundry. We learned this the hard way! My kids got terrible staph infections spread back and forth from reusing towels.

When i lived up north, I had a diverter on my dryer vent that vent'ed it into the un-heated garage, Did not make much difference to the temp in there and even when i had the double lint filter on it there was still lint getting into the garage. Other then the winter when i sent it into the garage for 2 years, i Vented it outside. When i sold the house i had to remove and fix the sheetrock on both sides, before the buyers inspector came.
